BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday urged political leaders and citizens to stay united in preserving the achievements of the July 2024 mass uprising, stressing that the sacrifices of the young people who lost their lives must never be forgotten.
“Let us join hands to strengthen the victory gained through the July 2024 movement,” he said while addressing the publication ceremony of four books written by prominent economist Professor Mahbub Ullah and his wife, Umme Salma Alo.
Fakhrul acknowledged that disagreements may exist among political parties, but emphasized that such differences must not jeopardize the hopes and aspirations of the nation. “The sacrifices of the brave youths who gave their lives cannot be allowed to go in vain – unity is essential to turn our collective dreams into reality.”
The programme, organised at the National Press Club, also marked the 81st birthday of Professor Mahbub Ullah. Praising the noted economist, Fakhrul described Mahbub Ullah as one of the country’s most respected intellectuals.
He said Mahbub Ullah has long been involved in BNP’s reform initiatives, contributing significantly to policy discussions and initiatives led by Begum Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul recalled Mahbub Ullah’s vital involvement in formulating the party’s political, constitutional and economic reform proposals, including those included in BNP’s Vision-2030 presented in 2016.
He said many of the core ideas of Vision-2030 stemmed from Prof Mahbub Ullah’s thoughts and input.
“He has a longstanding association with the BNP, and denying that is simply denying the truth. Whenever Begum Khaleda Zia needed consultation on national issues, she would call him,” Fakhrul noted.
Fakhrul added that Mahbub Ullah also played a significant role in forming the BNP-led Oikya Front against the Awami League’s authoritarian rule ahead of the 2018 national election.
