BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been exempted from a case filed in 2013 over allegations of obstructing police duties and attempted murder.
The order was issued on Sunday afternoon by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain following a hearing.
Fakhrul’s counsel, Advocate Syed Zainul Abedin Mezbah, confirmed the development.
According to case documents, on 2 March 2013, the police from Ramna Model Police Station filed the case against Fakhrul and 28 others.
Later that year, investigators submitted a charge sheet against 21 accused, including Fakhrul.
Advocate Mezbah explained that the defense subsequently moved the High Court challenging the charges brought against Fakhrul.
The High Court later ruled to quash the portion of the case concerning him.
Following that directive, the magistrate’s court has now formally relieved Fakhrul of the charges.
However, the trial proceedings against the remaining accused will continue.
