BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday urged for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the fire that erupted at the Secretariat to identify and hold accountable those responsible.In a statement, the BNP secretary general expressed profound concern over the incident, which occurred late last night in the highly sensitive Secretariat building, tragically claiming one life.
“The devastating fire at the Secretariat has inflicted extensive damage, reducing critical documents to ashes. This unfortunate event has placed the current interim government in an awkward and uncomfortable position,” Fakhrul remarked.
He strongly emphasized the need for a meticulous probe to uncover the actual perpetrators behind the incident, urging appropriate punitive measures against them once identified.
The BNP leader also appealed to the government to ensure adequate compensation for the family of the deceased fire victim and to extend necessary support to those injured during the calamity.
Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said in a programe that the fire broke out a day after the government sought some important documents.
“It has been raised questions among the people that the fire broke out in the Secretariat a day after the government summoned some important documents,” Rizvi said at a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Thursday.
He said, “We are anxious about the state. We found whenever the people protested against any minister or secretary, important files become disappeared, fire broke out.”
“We wouldn’t like to deliver any delicious speeches over the fire. But it created confusions,” he said.
The fire broke out on the sixth floor of Secretariat Building No. 7 around 1:52 am and was finally extinguished after nearly 10 hours of relentless firefighting efforts.
The blaze severely affected four floors of the building, from the sixth to the ninth, which housed several critical ministries and divisions including Road and Bridges, LGRD and Labor, resulting in significant disruptions and losses.
