BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored that Bangladesh’s ties with India must rest on mutual respect and equality, asserting that genuine friendship between the two neighbours should come without interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

Speaking at a memorial gathering in Kapasia, Gazipur, he alleged that several individuals involved in oppressing and torturing Bangladeshi citizens had fled to India and taken shelter there.
The event was organised to mark the ninth death anniversary of former BNP standing committee member Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah.

At the programme, Fakhrul also criticised India for its handling of long-standing water-sharing issues, accusing it of depriving Bangladesh of its due share of Teesta and Farakka waters.

Urging party members to guard against misinformation, he cautioned that attempts were being made from different quarters to weaken and destabilise the BNP. He called on leaders and activists at all levels to stay alert and prepare for the forthcoming national elections.

Referring to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said the people had placed their trust in him to form a neutral advisory board capable of ensuring a free, fair, and inclusive election acceptable to all political parties.

However, he expressed concern over what he described as partiality among some advisers, emphasising that both the BNP and the people of Bangladesh expect complete impartiality and fairness.

Highlighting the BNP’s reform initiatives, Fakhrul said the party’s 31-point programme aims to restore public confidence and bring new hope to the nation.
