THE recent political upheaval in Bangladesh has inadvertently cast a spotlight on a deeply entrenched extortion.

While the ouster of the Awami League government has led to a temporary respite for victims, the power vacuum is rapidly filling with new players eager to claim their share of the illicit spoils.

For years, the capital and other parts of the country have been under the iron grip of extortionists.

A nexus of politicians, law enforcement, and criminal elements has systematically preyed on businesses, hawkers, and commuters.

From bustling marketplaces to crowded bus terminals, no one was immune.
The modus operandi was simple yet ruthless.

Hawkers were forced to pay a daily ‘tax’ for the privilege of eking out a living on the streets. Bus and truck operators faced similar demands.

The money, collected with brutal efficiency, flowed into the coffers of political parties and their affiliated gangs.

The current power vacuum has triggered a turf war. Old players, once shielded by political patronage, are now on the defensive.

New contenders, sensing an opportunity, are flexing their muscles.

The battle for control of extortion rackets is playing out in the open, with brazen displays of power and intimidation.

While the interim government has vowed to crack down on extortion, the challenge is immense.

The deep-rooted connections between criminals and politicians make it difficult to dismantle the network.

Moreover, the fear instilled in victims often prevents them from coming forward.

It is important that the authorities take decisive action to address this scourge.

This includes not only arresting and prosecuting those involved but also implementing long-term reforms to prevent a recurrence.

The people of Bangladesh deserve a society free from fear and exploitation.

The interim government must functionate all the institutions and restore system that will not allow discrimination, corruption, extortion, any types of oppression to anyone for their race, color, religion and political affiliation.
