Nahid Islam, the convenor of the Nationalist Citizens’ Party (NCP), warned on Sunday that those engaged in extortion and criminal politics will face the same fate as former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power last year.

Addressing a street rally in Jhalakathi town, Nahid denounced what he described as a rising tide of political violence and criminality, pointing to the recent stone-bludgeoning death of a man in Dhaka over extortion demands.

“Those who believe in politics of occupation, extortion, mugging, and commission-will be shown the door just like the people ousted Hasina,” he declared.

The NCP leader issued a stern message to political factions plotting elections without prior reforms and justice. “The people will not accept any election without accountability and structural reform,” Nahid said. “Those pushing for polls without ensuring justice are the very ones conspiring to delay it.”

Referring to the previous Awami League government, Nahid said, “The autocratic regime clung to power by force for 16 years, committing every kind of repression imaginable. One party still believes

an election alone can bring reform-Hasina believed that too. Now Hasina has fled the country, but her corrupt system remains in place.”

Nahid reiterated his party’s commitment to building a democratic order rooted in justice and dignity for the country’s youth. “We are fighting for democracy, justice, and a politics of respect for the young generation,” he said.

NCP’s central member-secretary Akhtar Hossain joined the event, demanding immediate student union elections in all public universities, which have remained suspended for years.

Earlier in the day, NCP leaders and activists took part in a symbolic walk through the streets of Jhalakathi, drawing large crowds and a festive atmosphere. The rally was part of the party’s ongoing campaign for reforms and youth-focused politics.

Senior NCP leaders including joint convenor Samanta Sharmin and joint member-secretary Tasnim Zara were also present.

Before the rally, the NCP delegation visited the historic Nesarabad Darbar Sharif, where they offered prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Kayed Saheb Huzur. They also held a private meeting with Maulana Khalilur Rahman, son of the revered cleric.
