The Bangladesh Sangbadpathro Karmachari Federation (BSKF) and the Bangladesh Federal Union of Newspaper Press Workers (BFUNPW) have called on the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) to extend the Eid holidays for newspapers to five days in observance of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
This request was made during an emergency joint meeting held at the BSS employees’ union office in Dhaka.
The NOAB had announced a three-day Eid holiday for the newspaper industry, which is shorter than the five-day government holiday.
The meeting was chaired by BFUNPW President Md Alamgir Hossain Khan, with BSKF President Matiur Rahman Talukder serving as the chief speaker. Other leaders from both federations also addressed the meeting.
The leaders expressed concern that the NOAB’s decision to declare only a three-day holiday for the newspaper industry was unfair and discriminatory towards journalists and press workers.
They emphasized that this was a violation of their rights, particularly since the government had announced a five-day holiday for the occasion.
In light of this, the federations have urged NOAB to reconsider its decision and extend the Eid holiday for newspaper workers to five days, allowing them to celebrate the festival with their families.
They expressed hope that NOAB would address their demand fairly and equitably.
