The country’s first resort and entertainment park, Zakaria Holiday Resort, was built in Sylhet with the funding of expatriates to expand the tourism industry. This resort worth hundreds of crores of taka is now on the verge of destruction.
The Jestet Holiday Resort, also known as Zakaria City, has been built keeping the natural beauty of the hills and hills, a paradise of natural beauty intact. It is a tourism and entertainment center of international standard.
This resort, built on about 17 acres of hilly land, was inaugurated on April 29, 2004. Its founding chairman is renowned pediatrician Dr. M. Zakaria Hossain.
To increase the capacity of the resort, which was built with almost 100% expatriate funding, new expatriate investments were added. Zakaria Holiday Resort was renamed Excelsior Hotel and Resort. Many positions of directors, including the chairman, changed. The new investment has raised the value of this resort to more than one billion taka. With the new management responsibilities, expatriates have become involved in various troubles including attacks, lawsuits, factionalism.
In this situation, the resort’s administrator Bilal Uddin Ahmed held a press conference and demanded security.
He said that due to the differences in the resort’s directors, one party is filing harassment cases against the resort’s officials and employees. In this situation, they are suffering from serious insecurity.
Excelsior’s Present chairman, UK expatriate Md. Zilu Mia, and vice chairman Abdul Baset, complained that one party is threatening to kill them. Due to which expatriates are afraid to come to the country. The chairman of the organization said that this is hindering investment.
He said that in 2024, although he was in London almost all year round, a director filed three cases against him over the student-public uprising.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan police Mohammad Saiful Islam said, ‘There is no chance of anyone being harmed through conspiracy.’
Founder chairman of this resort, Dr. Md. Zakaria Hossain, said, ‘If such a conspiracy is made against expatriates, expatriate investment will be discouraged.’
Former chairman Shah Jamal Nurul Huda, who is being complained about by everyone, including the current chairman, said that he resigned from the posts of chairman and director because expatriates were fighting for power.
This beautiful resort is located in Khadimnagar, Sadar Upazila, about 15 kilometers from Sylhet city.
