A Dhaka court today placed Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), on a five-day remand in a corruption case over the embezzlement of Tk 4 crore from a development project.

Judge (in charge) Mohammad Ibrahim Miah of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Minhaj Bin Islam, also the investigation officer, produced Kalimullah before the court seeking a 10-day remand.

In his petition, the IO said Kalimullah was directly involved in the misappropriation and needed to be interrogated in custody to uncover vital information and identify others linked to the crime.

During the hearing, Kalimullah denied the allegations, claiming he had only acted on instructions from former education minister Dipu Moni.

However, ACC Public Prosecutor Tariqul Islam told media that no lawyers appeared in court to defend him.

The court eventually granted a five-day remand for interrogation.

Earlier, on August 7, Kalimullah was sent to jail after appearing before another Dhaka court in connection with the same case.
