A Dhaka court has granted police permission to produce Captain (retired) AB Tajul Islam, the former state minister for Liberation War Affairs from the ousted Awami League government, in connection with a murder case.

The case concerns the death of Md Salahuddin Sumon in an area under Khilgaon Police Station during the July Uprising, according to Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq approved the application on 8 September, following a request from Khilgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector Muhammad Asadur Rahman dated 2 September.

Tajul Islam, who has been in custody since his arrest by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 20 August 2024, appeared before the court wearing a helmet, a bulletproof vest, and handcuffs. He was subsequently returned to jail after the hearing.

The case file states that Md Salahuddin Sumon was shot by unidentified assailants while taking part in the July Uprising on 19 July of the previous year and died at the scene. The victim’s wife has filed the murder case, naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as an accused.
