Ex-secy Shafiqul, 7 AL men held

Former secretary Bhuiyan Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, along with seven more leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations, has been arrested.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the matter on Tuesday.
Former secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam was arrested in a case filed on charges of conspiring against the government. Earlier, in the same case, former Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddiqui was arrested from a “Mancha 71” event.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Talebur Rahman on Tuesday said that Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police had arrested Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam along with seven leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations.

In this regard, DB Additional Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam said that he was arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station. He was taken into custody after receiving information about his secret communications with Latif Siddiqui, Abu Alam Shahid Khan, and others.

Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam served as Secretary of the Planning Division in 2013. Later, in 2015, he was appointed Secretary at the President’s Office.
Earlier on Monday, former secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan was arrested.
