A court in Narayanganj has granted a three-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Haque in connection with the murder of labor activist Ashiq Mia during an anti-discrimination student protest in Kanchpur, Sonargaon.

On Wednesday (February 5), the police presented Haque before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Narayanganj, presided over by Judge Noor Mohsin, seeking a five-day remand. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Zakir stated that Ashiq Mia’s mother, Kulsum Begum, filed a case with Sonargaon Police Station on August 14 last year.

The incident occurred on August 4, when protesters, including Ashiq, gathered in front of the Sinha Garments on the Kanchpur highway as part of the anti-discrimination student movement.

Allegedly, under the direct orders and guidance of former Law Minister Anisul Haque and other accused individuals, police opened indiscriminate fire on the demonstrators. Ashiq was shot in the chest and collapsed on the spot.

He, along with 15-20 others injured, was first taken to Al-Baraka Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on August 8 while undergoing treatment.

Following the investigation, Anisul Haque was officially shown as arrested in the case.
