Turin Afroz, a former prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), has been sent to jail following the completion of her remand in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of a student during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque on Saturday rejected Afroz’s bail plea and ordered sending her to jail after a hearing.
Sub-Inspector Suman Mia of Uttara West Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, produced Turin before the court upon completion of her four-day remand and sought an order to keep her in jail.
The defense counsel requested bail, which was opposed by Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki on behalf of the state. After hearing both sides, the court issued the jail order.
The information was confirmed by SI Atikur Rahman Khan from the prosecution unit of Uttara West Police Station.
Turin Afroz was arrested on the night of April 7 from her residence in Uttara in connection with a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of a student named Abdul Jabbar during the student-led anti-discrimination protests. The next day, the police sought a 10-day remand, and the court granted four days.
According to the case details, on August 5, the day of the ouster of Hasina government during the mass uprising, Abdul Jabbar was reportedly shot in front of the BNS Center on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway under Uttara West Police Station at around 12 noon.
He was later treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On March 27, Jabbar filed a case with Uttara West Police Station, naming 50 individuals including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and listing 100-150 unnamed accused. Turin Afroz is the 30th accused in the case.
Turin previously served as a prosecutor in the International Crimes Tribunal, established in 2010 to try war crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War. She played a key role in several high-profile cases, including that of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam.
However, in November 2019, the then Awami League government removed her from the post after reports surfaced of a secret meeting between her and former NSI Director General Wahidul Haque who was facing a war crimes case at the time.
Turin had also sought an Awami League nomination to contest the 2018 parliamentary elections. Following the fall of the AL-led regime in August last year, several legal cases were filed against many of its affiliates, including Turin.
