DU Correspondent :
Former acting registrar of Dhaka University (DU) Syed Rezaur Rahman has been removed from his position for allegation over the publication of a controversial article in a souvenir book that mentioned Ziaur Rahman as the first president of Bangladesh.
The university authority also demoted section officer Rifat Amin for his alleged involvement with this incident.
The decisions were taken in a syndicate meeting chaired by DU VC Akhtaruzzaman on Monday afternoon.
An article written by Syed Rezaur Rahman in the souvenir book, published to mark the 95th founding anniversary of the university,
said Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh, which triggered violent protest on the campus led by ruling party backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Soon after the university authority suspended Rezaur Rahman temporarily, it also confiscated the copies of the souvenir.
The article reads, “Ziaur Rahman became the president of Bangladesh on Apr 21, 1977 after the Liberation War and was killed in a military coup on May 30, 1981.”
It describes country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as one of the main leaders of Bangladesh (who) was at the forefront in the struggle to carve out Bangladesh from East Pakistan and is considered as the Father of the Nation.
Confirming the news, DU VC Akhtaruzzaman said Rezaur Rahman was removed from the university, while Rifat Amin was demoted from his position as per the recommendation of the committee that was formed after the controversial incident.
