Former chief justice (CJ) ABM Khairul Haque, now in jail, suffered a heart attack and has been admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), widely known as PG Hospital.

His son, Ashikul Haque, confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday evening. “He was taken to the hospital in the morning and admitted to the CCU in the evening. After several tests, it was confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack,” he said.

Central Jail Superintendent AKM Masum said Khairul fell ill around 11 am inside the prison and was later transferred to the hospital for treatment.

Police arrested Khairul on 24 July from his residence in Dhanmondi. He was later shown arrested in a murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station and produced before the court, which ordered him sent to jail.

This was the first time a former chief justice in Bangladesh had been arrested and imprisoned in connection with a murder case.

ABM Khairul Haque, the country’s 19th chief justice, has long faced criticism over alleged political bias, controversial verdicts, and use of constitutional amendments for political purposes.
