A Dhaka court has rejected bail petitions filed by former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in two separate cases, one linked to murder and the other to corruption allegations.

Judge Jahangir Hossain of Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-18 on Tuesday dismissed Haque’s bail plea in the case filed over the killing of Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during the anti-discrimination student movement in Jatrabari.

Ahad was shot and fatally attacked on July 18 last year, and his father later filed a case naming 467 accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Haque was listed as the 44th accused in that case.

In a separate case, Judge Nargis Islam of the 2nd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court denied his bail application in connection with allegations of corruption, biased verdicts, and forging judicial rulings during his tenure as a judge. The case was lodged at Shahbagh Police Station by a Supreme Court lawyer accusing him of delivering politically motivated judgments.

Haque was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and has since been in jail in connection with the Jatrabari murder case.
