A Dhaka court on Sunday refused bail to former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in a case filed over allegations of corruption, deliberate misuse of judicial authority, and fabricating a court judgment.
The case stems from his role in altering the landmark 13th Amendment verdict that had abolished Bangladesh’s caretaker government system.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman ordered Haque to be sent to jail upon completion of his remand.
Defence counsel Monayem Nabi Shahin sought his release on bail, while state prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman opposed the plea. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail petition.
According to the case filed on July 27 by Supreme Court lawyer Md Mujahidul Islam, Haque is accused of altering the short order of the 13th Amendment verdict, delivered on May 10, 2011, to suit the interests of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, allegedly in exchange for a post-retirement position.
The alleged changes appeared in the full judgment published on September 16, 2012 over a year after the original ruling.
Haque was arrested on July 24 from his residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area in connection with a separate murder case tied to the July Movement protests.
He was subsequently shown arrested in multiple other cases, including one in Narayanganj over similar verdict forgery allegations.
