A team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch detained Bangladesh’s former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda from the capital’s Uttara area on Sunday evening.

He was arrested after a group of people had cordoned him and informed the police.

Confirming the arrest, Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-
Charge Md Hafizur Rahman stated, “There is a case against former CEC A.K.M. Nurul Huda. He has been arrested, and further legal procedures are underway.”

The arrest comes on the same day the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against 24 individuals, including three former Chief Election Commissioners, accusing them of conducting fraudulent and controversial national elections.

A five-member BNP delegation, led by party executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan, submitted the case application.

The accused include key officials from the controversial 2014, 2018, and 2024 national elections.

The list of accused spans multiple high-profile figures, including former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad (2014), A.K.M. Nurul Huda (2018), and Kazi Habibul Awal (2024), as well as commissioners, election secretaries, and top law enforcement and intelligence officials who were in charge during those election years.

Among those named are former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Inspector Generals of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker, A.K.M. Shahidul Haque, and Javed Patwary.

Also mentioned are former police and intelligence chiefs from Special Branch (SB), National Security Intelligence (NSI), and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), as well as former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed and other senior officials.

The case accuses the named individuals of orchestrating and executing elections that were allegedly engineered to consolidate power through illegal means, undermining democratic processes in the country.
