Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has been arrested by police in Dhaka in connection with a case alleging electoral misconduct.
According to Mohammad Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner (Administration and Intelligence-South) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), a team from the Detective Branch (DB) detained Awal on Wednesday afternoon during a raid in the Moghbazar area of the capital.
The arrest follows the filing of a case by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on 22 June at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station (Case No. 11), which names 24 individuals-including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former Chief Election Commissioners-on charges of vote rigging and irregularities in the last three national elections held under the Awami League government.
The complaint was lodged by Md Salah Uddin Khan, a member of BNP’s National Executive Committee, and accuses the named individuals of electoral manipulation and professional misconduct.
Earlier, on 22 June, another former CEC, Nurul Huda, was arrested in Dhaka’s Uttara area on similar charges. He was presented before a court the following day and subsequently placed on remand for further questioning.
