The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed that the timing of Bangladesh’s national election is solely a matter for the country itself, while underscoring the importance of completing key reforms in advance.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, assured that the European Union is not exerting any pressure regarding the electoral process.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club’s VIP Lounge on Monday, the ambassador addressed a range of national and international issues.
He expressed hope that all political parties, alongside the interim government, would cooperate in advancing necessary reforms.
“The European Union is willing to assist in the election process, but the decision on when to hold the election rests entirely with the Government of Bangladesh,” Ambassador Miller stated in response to a question from the audience.
He also stressed the need for transparency and accountability in investigating the deaths and injuries resulting from the July uprising, urging that those responsible be brought to justice.
Ambassador Miller noted that recent political developments in Bangladesh present a valuable opportunity for implementing essential reforms. “This is a moment that must be seized,” he remarked.
On the humanitarian situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, the EU envoy emphasised the urgent need for humanitarian assistance on both sides of the border and called for the equitable distribution of aid.
During the event, DCAB President AKM Moinuddin moderated the discussion, while the organisation’s General Secretary Arifuzzaman Mamun delivered the welcome address.
In response to a separate question, the ambassador commented that should the Government of Bangladesh wish to repatriate funds laundered to the European Union, it must initiate formal diplomatic engagement supported by credible data and evidence.
