Environment, Forests and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Wednesday said the European Union (EU) will back the ongoing reform initiatives of the interim government.
She said that the EU has also stated that it would support Bangladesh in expanding renewable energy facilities and offer cooperation in specific areas of expertise, said the adviser.
In addition, she said, the EU will prioritise financing in key climate actions.
The environment adviser made the remarks at a meeting with EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller.
The EU envoy paid a courtesy call on her at Bangladesh Secretariat here, a ministry release said.
During the meeting, they discussed pressing environmental concerns, climate change mitigation, and ways to strengthen Bangladesh-EU cooperation on sustainable development initiatives.
Rizwana said the EU has been a key partner in Bangladesh’s efforts to combat climate change and protect the Bangladesh’s rich biodiversity.
“We value the EU’s continued support in environmental conservation and their commitment to promoting green growth strategies in our country,” she added.
Michael Miller said the EU is deeply interested in collaborating with Bangladesh on various issues, including climate change.
He affirmed that the EU would continue supporting the interim government and is confident in working with Bangladesh.
He emphasised the need for stabilising law and order to attract more foreign investment and mentioned that the EU is interested in financing gender-sensitive projects.
The EU envoy expressed the EU’s willingness to further collaborate with Bangladesh in areas like renewable energy, forest conservation, and pollution control.
The discussion also touched on upcoming joint initiatives between the ministry and the EU to enhance environmental governance, reduce pollution, and protect natural resources.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh-EU environmental cooperation, especially in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
