The European Union has supported Bangladesh’s ongoing transition under the interim government, saying it views the process as a crucial step toward restoring democratic governance.

In a statement on its official Facebook page on Thursday, the EU welcomed the leadership of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus as the country moves toward what it hopes will be participatory, free and fair elections scheduled for February next year.

EU officials noted that the interim administration now carries the responsibility of creating conditions that allow all citizens to take part without fear or obstruction.
“We urge the leadership of Chief Adviser Yunus in view of the holding of participatory, free and fair elections in February next year,” it said.

The bloc also urged political parties across the spectrum to engage constructively in the coming months.
According to the EU, cooperation and dialogue will be essential to stabilising the political environment and ensuring a credible electoral process.
“We encourage the political parties to engage constructively in next steps,” EU said.
With international attention fixed on Bangladesh’s political reset, Brussels signalled that it will continue monitoring the situation and stands ready to support efforts that strengthen democratic norms and institutions.
