Erosion on Teesta River causing residents to remain alert

The continuing erosion of the Teesta River has getting intensified in Kaunia of Rangpur. The people of Gadai and Panjarbhanga villages on the banks of the river are spending sleepless nights in fear of collapse. Already, Gadai Panjarbhanga of Balapara Union, several settlements of the village and 100 hectares of cropland and trees have been lost under Teesta River.

The demand of helpless local people in Teesta River banks is not for relief but to save the last possessions left by their fathers and grandfathers from the river breach. They complain that they are not getting any results by applying to the Water Development Board (PUBO) authorities and upazila administration.

It is known that thousands of families in the riverside villages including Gadai, Pancharbhanga, ArajiHarishwar, CharHaiwat Khan of Kauniaupazila are under threat of destruction. In the past two weeks, the Teestariver’s coral grass has destroyed a few houses of PanjharBhanga village and hundreds of bighas of cropland, bamboo groves, trees and rivers have disappeared. After receiving the news of the breach, the officials including AhsanHabib, Supervising Engineer of Water Development Board Rangpur came to visit last Wednesday.

In this matter, KauniaUpazilaNirbahi Officer MahidulHaque said that quick steps are being taken to prevent the breakdown by talking to the concerned officials.

After inspecting the breach of Teestariver, the supervising engineer of Water Development Board Rangpur, AhsanHabib said, the work is going on through the tender of 190 meters bank.

The place is good there. I will try to control the trend of breakage by allocating geo bags to the higher authorities to prevent breakage in the rest of the places.
