Staff Reporter :

Eminent economist and chief of the white paper prepare committee on the country’s economy, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya on Thursday said most corruptions was taken place in energy and power, banks and ICT sector during the deposed autocrat Hasina regime.

“While efforts to introduce reforms have started, political, administrative, and institutional hurdles remain,” the economist said while exchanging views with the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) in the capital.

The economist said his committee will recommend the government on light of the fallen government’s misdeeds in the significant sectors of the national economy.

Dr. Debapriya said the government must balance the need for reforms to ensure sustainable development with the potential for economic repercussions if individuals, groups, or parties feel targeted.

The economist said a lawless economy had emerged in the recent years and created an immense nexus involving bureaucrats, ‘uniform-wearing bureaucrats’, politicians, and businessmen, which monopolized the relevant institutions and organisations to siphon off public funds for personal gains.

Dr. Debapriya said that systemic corruption that permeated various institutions in the previous government led to a misallocation of public funds and hindered development of the country.
