Election must be held in Feb under Dr Yunus: AG
Staff Reporter :
Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman has said that the upcoming election will be held in February under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He stated that no matter what obstacles arise ahead of the election, the people will resist them.
This is the legitimacy of the new government and the people’s social contract that came through the July uprising.
He said these things on Wednesday morning at a views-exchange meeting organized by the District Diabetic Association on the premises of the Jhenidah Diabetes Hospital.
The Attorney General said, “Many are questioning the legitimacy of the current government. I want to tell you, since 2009, millions of people have been victims of politically motivated cases. Thousands have been forcibly disappeared, many have been victims of extrajudicial killings.
When all constitutional avenues were closed with the fascist Hasina regime in power, it was the country’s students and people who, through the July revolution, forced Hasina to flee the country.
This victory of the students and the people has opened the path of democratic transition in the country. This open and changed situation is what has given legitimacy to the current government. The people themselves have given this government its authority.”
He further said, “Among all the governments formed through civilizations across the world, the present interim government is the most legitimate one. Those who had held the people of this country hostage have now started various conspiracies to foil the upcoming election.”
The meeting was presided over by Md. Moazzem Hossain, president of the Jhenidah Diabetic Association, and conducted by its general secretary Munshi Kamal Azad Pannu. Among others, district BNP president Advocate M.A. Majid, association vice-president Zahiduzzaman Mona, Md. Akhtaruzzaman, and Md. Zahidul Islam spoke at the event.
