Since the formation of the Interim Government following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina government last year, the political parties have been demanding for specific schedule of the parliamentary election.
Though the Chief Adviser to the Interim Government Prof Muhammad Yunus in the beginning did not mentioned the tentative timeline but recently he has been giving hints that the election would be held by the end of this year.
On Thursday, he again told a commissioner of the German
government Zarah Bruhn during a call at the State Guest House Jamuna that the election would be held before the ending of this year.
During the meeting he also sought support of the German government to make the general election a success.
On different occasions, he has been giving such statement regarding the parliamentary poll but he every time mentioned that the election would be held after some reforms.
In the meantime, all the reform commissions have submitted their final report before Dr Yunus so that he can proceed with it how the reform will be done before holding a free and fair election.
However, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam recently stated that the 13th parliamentary elections would be held either in December next or March 2026.
He said that the final decision for holding the election would depend on the consensus of the political parties.
Centring the parliamentary election, there are different opinions about which election would be held first – national or local government election.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been advocating that the general election should be held first while Jamaat-e-Islami has been prioritising the local government election should be held first.
When the political parties are demanding for election schedule, the students who deposed Sheikh Hasina from her despotic rule are going to float a fresh political party in the name ‘National Citizen Party’ on Friday.
Naturally it would add another dimension in the political platforms and the upcoming election.
On the other hand, different countries including the US have expressed its desire to support Bangladesh in the peaceful transition to the path of democracy.
