Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has announced that the Election Commission (EC) will take charge of immediate reforms within its own jurisdiction.
He clarified that reforms related to political matters would fall under the purview of the National Consensus Commission.
The CEC made these remarks while addressing the media following a meeting with the newly appointed Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Susan Ryle, at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Thursday.
Nasir Uddin explained that the Australian High Commissioner had inquired about the EC’s preparedness for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections. In response, the EC provided a detailed overview of its preparations.
He also mentioned that Susan Ryle had asked about the ongoing reform initiatives and expressed her readiness to offer any necessary support.
Additionally, the CEC shared that the EC briefed the High Commissioner on key updates, including the voter list revision, advancements in procurement, legal reforms, and the registration of political parties.
When asked about specific reform initiatives, Nasir Uddin reaffirmed that the EC would address immediate, feasible reforms within its jurisdiction before the elections. However, he emphasized that certain political reform issues are outside the EC’s control and would be handled by the National Consensus Commission.
