Our people are tolerant as long as they are not subjected to fear the government and dared to resort to torture and disappearances for the demand of their legitimate freedom.
Both Pakistan and Bangladesh were born at the heavy cost of blood and sacrifices of the people. While right leaderships are still held in high esteem, the ambitious ones were punished ruthlessly. No lies make these tragic examples undone. Democratic politics of AK Fazlul Haque, HS Suhrawardy, Manik Mia and many others will win the day and they will live in hearts of the people. Lies and cheating against the people will not earn anybody respect and adulation.
The question is when we have United Nations Charter and America is giving leadership in advancing their most cherished democratic ideals we see no reason for our people to feel alone. Sending observers proved futile more than once. Let the United Nations hold the election under a caretaker government with no ambition for power and see how popular is the present government.
With our limited knowledge we have to say that communism is very attracted to dictators who have no idea of government and who can play power game with ruthless power of easily available military hardware.
The idealogical battle between power-greedy dictatorship and the freedom of the people can be won not only by military weapons but by flourishing of democracy all over. The era of blood letting of people for democracy must end.
Bangladesh was born in the midst of high level misjudgements and mean treacheries of leaders in the final days of Pakistan. In our view the West Pakistan army’s inhuman acts were done to end Pakistan and not to save it. Our people have paid the whole price for finding their leaders away and not with them.
The people were numbed when they saw Bangladesh was made a graveyard of democracy to be replaced by revolutionary socialism by committed democratic leaders who assured that they did not want prime ministership, they were struggling with the people for their rights. Bangabandhu’s famous 7th March speech could not have been more stronger in motivating the people about securing their democratic rights.
But the perilous journey under the influence of socialism which had no hold on our people, denuded the people of all democratic rights including the press freedom and independence of the judiciary. The new revolutionary government needed no election. The violation of human rights to life and liberty were not cared for.
The present government changed the Constitution to make election as an affair the government servants for the government to win. We have no people’s election, only election by government servants to obey the sitting government to announce victory for the sitting government.
The people are not to have a say who will be their government. In short, this government is following the way of communist dictatorship to be in power as long as it can spread corruption freely and the people can be kept subdued by alliance with undemocratic forces of other countries.
