Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the election will be held by December this year if political parties do not demand significant reforms.

He made these remarks on Tuesday while speaking to journalists at an event held at the Krishibid Institution (KIB) in Khamarbari.

The press secretary said, “The government has outlined two potential timelines. If political parties do not demand significant reforms, the election will be held by December this year. However, if substantial reforms are requested, the government will extend the timeline by six months to accommodate those changes.”

Expressing hope for a consensus-based election, he said six commissions formed to reform various sectors of the state will submit their reports by January 15. Decisions regarding the election timeline will be made following discussions with all stakeholders.

On corruption and political accountability, he emphasised that individuals involved in plunder, corruption, and the mass killings in July-August have no right to participate in politics. He also clarified that the government is not considering the “Minus Two Formula.”

Regarding the country’s economic status, the press secretary said, “The economy has shown signs of recovery. Based on the economic growth trajectory, the reserve was expected to be $20 billion, but it currently stands at $22 billion, indicating a turnaround.”
