The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested eight additional suspects in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrests but refrained from disclosing further information. He said details would be shared during a press briefing scheduled for 4:45 pm today at the DMP Media Centre.
DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali is expected to brief reporters on the latest developments in the investigation.
Shammo, a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research at DU and the Literary and Publication Secretary of the Chhatra Dal unit at Sir AF Rahman Hall, was fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13 by a group of 10–12 unidentified attackers.
His brother, Shariful Islam, filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station the following day, on May 14.
Earlier, five individuals had been arrested in the case. Among them, Ripon confessed his involvement before a court. The four other suspects in custody are Sohag, Hridoy Islam, Robin, and Sujon Sarker.
