Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on Saturday, June 7, following the official sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Zilhajj.

The National Moon Sighting Committee made the announcement after a meeting held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque conference hall. The meeting was presided over by Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain.

With the sighting of the moon, the month of Zilhajj in the Hijri year 1446 has officially commenced, confirming the date for one of the most sacred Islamic festivals observed by Muslims worldwide.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia announced the moon sighting a day earlier on Tuesday and will observe Eid-ul-Azha on Friday, June 6. Indonesia has also declared the same date for its celebrations, according to Gulf News.

Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to Allah and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command. The festival is marked by special prayers, the ritual slaughtering of animals, and the distribution of meat among family, friends, and the underprivileged.

As preparations get underway across Bangladesh, authorities have urged citizens to celebrate the occasion with solemnity, religious devotion, and adherence to public order and hygiene guidelines.
