Thousands of people have started returning to Dhaka from southwestern districts via the Paturia ferry ghat in Manikganj from Saturday morning.
A heavy rush of passengers was seen at the terminal in Shibalaya upazila, as returnees boarded ferries and launches to cross the Padma River. Authorities reported that 17 ferries and 20 launches were operating on the Paturia-Daulatdia route to ensure smooth and safe travel.
Although most passengers reported a relatively hassle-free journey, some raised concerns about being overcharged by transport operators. Responding to the complaints, a mobile court conducted drives at the terminal and fined two launches Tk26,000 for excessive fare collection and two buses Tk6,000 for carrying passengers beyond capacity.
Shibalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakir Hossain confirmed the enforcement actions, saying the drives were part of ongoing efforts to ensure passenger safety and prevent harassment.
Earlier, the government declared a nine-day holiday for public employees from March 28 to April 5 to facilitate Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. According to a joint survey by the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) and the Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF), more than 17 million people left the greater Dhaka area ahead of Eid, which was celebrated on March 31.
As the holiday draws to a close, authorities expect the return rush to intensify over the weekend.
