Zila Parishad polls: EC to act after date fixation thru gazette

The Election Commission has nothing to do in respect of the Zila Parishad elections unless it receives the gazette notification issued by the government fixing the date of polls.
This was stated in Parliament on Sunday by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, who is in charge of the Election Commission Secretariat in Parliament According to the Clause 19(A) of the Zila Parishad Act 2000, the date of the maiden election to the Zila Parishad shall be fixed by a gazette notification issued by the government, he told the House
replying to a tabled question of AKM Mayeedul Islam, MP (Kurigram-3).
“But the Election Commission has not yet received any such gazette notification,” the minister said.
He said, rules under the Zila Parishad Act 2000 are also needed to hold elections to the Zila Parishads, but the commission did not find the rules also.
Anisul Huq said the Election Commission has nothing to do for arranging the Zila Parishad elections unless it gets the gazette notification over the election date and the rules under the Zila Parishad Act.
Meanwhile, replying to a written question from Enamul Haque MP (Rajshahi-4), LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told Parliament there are 489 upazilas and 324 municipalities in the country. There are no municipalities in 178 upazilas, he said.
