Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has emphasised that the Election Commission (EC) is committed to maintaining neutrality and does not intend to favour or oppose any political party.

Speaking at an event organised by the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital, the CEC stated, “We, as members of the commission, do not want to engage in politics. We do not support or oppose any political party. We aim to remain neutral.”

The occasion was held to distribute the Journalist Hossain Zakir Best Reporting Award-2024.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the EC, the CEC pointed to political control over the commission as the primary source of criticism of its role.

“This is the main reason the Election Commission has often been subjected to criticism. Unless the influence of politicians on the EC is eliminated, the same issues will persist. While there may be numerous reasons, I believe political control over the EC is the most significant,” he stated.

The CEC also called for collective efforts to ensure a free and fair election, urging journalists and all segments of society to cooperate in achieving this goal.

“We are dedicated to holding a free and fair election. However, it will not be possible for us to achieve this alone without support from all quarters,” he added.
