NN Online:

The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for updating the voter list until April 27 to accommodate people whose data was either not collected or omitted in the latest update process.

“More importantly, the process to be a voter through online will continue all time,” Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said at a press briefing on primary data collected for updating the voter list at Nirbachan Bhaban in city’s Agargaon on Tuesday.

He said their field-level officials collected data on 49,70,388 people, who are eligible to be voters, till Monday (last date) of the door-to-door data collection campaign that started on January 20 simultaneously in the country.

“Those whose data were collected will be listed as voters on completion of the registration process,” he said.

Besides, the data of deceased 15,23,000 voters were collected and their names would be dropped from the final voter list, the EC official shared.

He said they earlier set a target of registering 61 lakh people as new voters this year. Revealing the statistics of data collection, Akhtar Ahmed said this time the voter growth rate is 3.9 per cent.

Of them, the exclusion rate has increased by 2.44 per cent and the registration rate sees an increase by 1.45 per cent, he said.

Akhtar Ahmed said the number of deceased voters is lower this time than that of three years’ voter list updating programme.

He said it would be known later upon talking to the field-level officials why such a thing happened.
