The National Identity Registration Division of the Election Commission (EC) has initiated discussions on including nicknames and the names of multiple wives in the National Identity Card (NID).
ASM Humayun Kabir, director general of National Identity Registration Division, shared this information with the media at his office on Monday.
Highlighting the rising number of NID correction requests, Humayun Kabir noted that many applicants report missing nicknames, making identification issues difficult to resolve.
“In a meeting held on Sunday, we considered adding a nickname field to Form 2 of the NID, which could aid in accurate identification,” said the official.
Humayun Kabir also mentioned that some women request to have their names included as second wives on their husband’s NID.
“While the EC cannot make such changes independently, we discussed reserving a space in Form 2 to accommodate this to address future complications,” he added.
He clarified that the inclusion of multiple wives’ names would require approval from the Election Commission, the Secretariat, or higher authorities.
