Tangail correspondent :
As the Sharadiya Durga Puja approaches, Tangail is abuzz with festive preparations. Artisans are working tirelessly to complete the idols of Goddess Durga and her children—Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesh, and Kartik. Their skilled hands are bringing life to the clay structures, while mandap decoration continues in parallel.
This year, around 1,220 Puja mandaps are expected to be set up across 12 upazilas of Tangail. Mandap committees are engaged in friendly competition over decorations and lighting arrangements to attract visitors.
During a visit to several temples and idol-making workshops, it was observed that the basic structure made of straw and clay is ready, and painting work is underway. Artisans mentioned that they feel pride and joy in continuing their ancestral craft, with many earning substantial income from selling idols of various sizes.
According to Pradip Kumar Goon Jhantu, General Secretary of Tangail District Puja Celebration Committee, “Idol-making is nearing completion. The festive vibe is clearly visible across the district. CCTV cameras are being installed at mandaps to ensure security.”
Superintendent of Police Md. Mizanur Rahman said, “A total of 950 members from police, RAB, Ansar, and other law enforcement agencies will be deployed across the mandaps. Mobile teams and plainclothes personnel will also be active.”
The festival will commence on September 27 with Panchami Puja and conclude on October 2 with Bijoya Dashami and idol immersion. The people of Tangail are hopeful for a peaceful and joyful celebration of one of the biggest festivals of the Hindu community.
