Foreign forces want to stop the development spree in Bangladesh and that is why they want to bring the BNP to power, Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal has said.
He was speaking at a seminar, titled “Democracy, Development and Elections: Bangladesh Perspective”, organized by Advocacy Campaign at the Teacher-Student Centre auditorium on the university campus on Thursday.
“Foreign forces want to put the BNP in power, like they placed Hamid Karzai on the throne of Afghanistan. They want to do it in order to stop the development of this country. The programs that the BNP is carrying out are not for a caretaker government but for another 1/11-like event.”
He said that the Awami League’s character is to come to power through votes while another quarter is busy destroying the country’s economy. They do not want fair polls in Bangladesh, the DU VC said.
According to a survey, Bangladesh’s GDP growth will exceed 10% if the ongoing development spree is continued, which was seen in the case of China and Japan. All the conspiracies are being hatched to obstruct this development process, he added.
The DU VC said that Sheikh Hasina had left power in the hands of the caretaker government in 2001 in the hope of fair elections. Latifur Rahman, the chief advisor of the then caretaker government, removed 11 secretaries from their positions after coming to power. The BNP came to power in 2001 with full support from him.
Since 2013, the BNP has been carrying out arson across the country, he said, adding that those resorting to communal violence also did not survive for long.
“Many people came to power before, but could anyone give a delta plan for the country? Did anyone build a nuclear power plant? Our delta plan is now taught at Harvard University,” Dr ASM Maksud Kamal said.
