Staff Reporter :
The University of Dhaka has decided to provide special privileges in undergraduate admissions for the 2024-2025 academic year to family members of those killed or injured during the July Uprising.
According to a press release issued yesterday (Monday) by the university’s Public Relations Office, the decision was made at a Deans’ Committee meeting held on May 5, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor.
The release states that the special admission privileges will apply to family members of individuals officially listed as martyrs or injured in the July-August 2023 student and mass uprising. Eligible family members include the spouse and children of the victims; in the absence of a spouse or children, siblings will be entitled to the benefits.
However, the exact nature of these privileges has not yet been finalized. Acting Director of the Public Relations Office, Rafiqul Islam Panna, said, “The specific benefits have not been decided yet. They will be determined in a future meeting.”
It is noteworthy that the July Uprising began as a protest against the quota system in government jobs, ultimately leading to the fall of the Awami League government.
