In the face of strong agitations over an allegation that he harassed a female student sexually, Chairman of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University Prof Dr Saiful Islam had to quit on Monday. Earlier, a 4th year female student of the department lodged a complaint with the Dhaka University authorities against Dr Saiful Islam that he harassed her when she had been at her residence on Saturday. As the incident came in the limelight, students of the department staged demonstrations on the campus this morning and confined Prof Saiful Islam to his office for three hours from 11 am to 2 pm demanding his resignation. Amid the growing demonstration, Prof Saiful Islam submitted his resignation letter to the university registrar. Connected, DU Proctor Prof Dr Amjad Ali said the matter will be investigated and the Syndicate of the university will decide Prof Saiful Islam’s fate. — UNB, Dhaka.
