Dhaka University (DU) students on Sunday besieged Shahbagh Police Station after a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the main suspect in the murder of Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER), expired without any action.

The protest followed a previously announced programme, beginning with a rally at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture. From there, students marched to the police station in a show of frustration and solidarity.

Around 12:30 pm, students from various departments gathered in front of Shahbagh Police Station, joined by several faculty members. At the rally, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niaz Ahmed Khan expressed support for the students and called for swift justice in Shammo’s murder.

Protesters said they had given the authorities a 48-hour deadline to arrest the key suspect. With no progress made, they said they had no choice but to escalate their demonstration.

“This was already part of our plan. We gave them time, but they failed us,” said DU student Arian.
“One of our brothers was murdered on campus, and the main accused is still roaming free. We will not return to our halls until justice is delivered,” he added.

The incident took place on the night of May 14 inside Suhrawardy Udyan, following an argument between Shammo and a group of individuals after a motorcycle accident. During the altercation, Shammo was attacked with a sharp weapon. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where doctors later pronounced him dead.
