Dhaka University (DU) students have launched a new wave of protests following the recent student revolution in the country and fall of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government, demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal and the prohibition of student politics in dormitories.

A group of students staged a demonstration at the university’s Raju Sculpture Memorial, calling for the resignation of all syndicate members, including the Vice-Chancellor.

Additionally, students of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall gathered in front of the hall and took an oath to abstain from all political activities within the dormitory. They also demanded the resignation of the hall provost.
Ahnaf Mujahid, a student of the hall, stated, “The students do not want any kind of politics in the hall. So they took an oath today.”

Shortly afterward, a group of students from Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall held a protest rally, marching from the hall to TSC to demand the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation.

The students alleged that when the Chhatra League, a student wing of the Awami League, hired street children from Dhaka to attack the students, the Vice-Chancellor did not protect them or take any action against the perpetrators. Consequently, they called for the resignation of the entire university syndicate, including the Vice-Chancellor.

The students also demanded a ban on all political activities on the university campus.

Zobair Ahmed, a student of the Islamic Studies Department, said at the Raju Sculpture gathering, “There is dirty politics among the teachers of the university. We don’t want any politics on campus. There should be no politics between the faculty and students of the university.”

Furthermore, the students voiced their concerns on social media, advocating for a ban on all forms of campus politics. They stated that they are united in preventing political leaders from entering the dormitories.

It is worth mentioning that the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League, carried out a violent attack on students on July 15, resulting in thousands of injuries.

On July 17, the DU syndicate decided to close the campus indefinitely and instructed students to leave the dormitories by 6 pm. Subsequently, law enforcement, including police and RAB, attacked student rallies, using sound grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets not only on campus but also inside the dormitories, including the girls’ halls.
