Students of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday have demanded cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with the university.
They organised a press conference at the university’s Madhur Canteen regarding this issue. At the conference, Mohammad Abbasuddin, a student of the Arabic department of DU from the 2018-19 session, said, “The movement to cancel the affiliation of the seven colleges started in 2019, where Advisers Asif Mahmud and Nahid Islam played a significant role. They were even victims of an attack by the Chhatra League.
“The Dhaka University administration has failed to provide adequate facilities for its students, yet it has taken responsibility for around 2 lakh 67 thousand students of the seven colleges. As a result, we are constantly facing various problems. Therefore, we demand the cancellation of the affiliation of the seven colleges with DU.”
Nafiur Rahman, a student of the Accounting department, also spoke at the press conference. He said, “DU students face many administrative challenges due to the seven colleges. DU teachers spend time on the seven colleges, which negatively affects the quality of our education. Issues such as seat shortages, disrupted regular classes, and delays in publishing results have become more prominent.
“The seven colleges are considered in the university’s international rankings, which impacts the university’s position.”
Additionally, the students have declared that they will strongly resist the enrollment of any student from the seven colleges in DU’s affiliation starting from the 2024-25 academic session.
“If a new building is constructed for the seven colleges, we will launch a fierce protest and lock all the buildings of the university. Our movement will continue until our demands are met,” said Nafiur Rahman.
