The seven colleges of the capital will no longer be affiliated with the Dhaka University (DU) and no new admission test will be held under this affiliation with DU from 2024-25 academic sessions and the students of seven colleges have welcomed the decision taken by authorities of Dhaka University (DU) and the colleges to end the affiliation between them.
The decision has been taken at a meeting of principals of seven colleges with DU Vice Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan held at Prof Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
DU Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed made these remarks in a written statement after the meeting.
The written statement stated that as per the demands of the students, it was strongly recommended in the meeting to conduct the activities of the next academic year by an expert committee formed by the Ministry of Education.
Students, however, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to implement their five other demands, including the resignation of DU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Mamun Ahmed.
At the press conference, Dhaka College student Sajeeb Uddin said, “Pro-VC Mamun must resign within four hours, by 4 pm. The attackers should be identified and brought to justice. Otherwise, we will opt for tough programmes.”
“If our demands are not accepted, no vehicles, including DU buses, will ply in front of the seven colleges,” Moinul Islam, a student of Dhaka College, warned while speaking at a press briefing at around 7:00pm at the college’s Shaheed Minar premises.
However from the 2024-25 academic year, the expert committee will take decisions on all matters of the seven colleges including the number of seats and admission fees.
The statement also added that the university administration will take full responsibility to ensure that the academic life is not disrupted for students who are currently enrolled under DU’s ongoing academic programs.
