The Dhaka University (DU) fact-finding committee has identified 122 students allegedly involved in the violent attacks that took place on campus between July 15 and August 5, 2024.
The committee, after months of investigation, has confirmed that the violence was not a mere clash between student groups but a premeditated attack.
The probe report was handed over to DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan today and is set to be discussed in the upcoming syndicate meeting for further action. The university authorities will take institutional measures against those found guilty, though they cannot directly file a criminal case, said Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan, the committee’s convener and an associate professor in the Department of Law.
The investigation revealed that several former students played a major role in the attacks, with some identified as the most brutal perpetrators. DU authorities may consider canceling their academic certificates in cases of serious offenses. Additionally, the report states that some attackers came from outside the university, and DU will collaborate with their respective institutions to take necessary measures.
The investigation was conducted by analyzing video evidence from students, national and international media, and campus portals, using digital fact-checking tools to ensure accuracy and avoid wrongful accusations. However, all hard drives containing university CCTV footage were reported missing, making it difficult to verify certain aspects of the attacks.
The report also acknowledges the possibility of sexual harassment and abuse of female students, particularly inside buses where many had taken shelter. While no concrete evidence was found, several incidents of molestation were documented.
A press release from the committee highlighted the severity of the July 15, 2024, attacks, particularly assaults on female students and the obstruction of injured students receiving treatment at Dhaka University Medical Center and Dhaka Medical College.
