Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) has announced the three-day ‘Smritir Vijay 2025’ event series to mark Martyred Intellectuals Day and Victory Day, as per an invitation released on Friday.
The event kicks off on December 14, honoring the 1971 war’s martyred intellectuals-nation’s guiding lights-with tributes. The following two days feature open-air screenings of Liberation War films, lantern flights, light displays, mural paintings, and festive celebrations culminating in Victory Day on December 16.
A pioneer in Bangladesh’s film movement, DUFS-established in the 1960s-promotes film culture, audience awareness, analysis, and discourse. As a member of DUES Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies, it organises short and feature film festivals.
Its flagship is the annual ‘Amar Bhashar Chalachchitra’ festival, launched in 2002 for the 50th anniversary of the Language Movement and held regularly since 2007. Since 2017, the best Bengali film receives the prestigious Hiralal Sen Award.

DUFS also hosts the International Inter-University Short Film Festival since 2007, drawing young filmmakers worldwide. The 2017 edition featured 1,702 entries from 96 countries, with 200 selected films screened at cultural venues, TSC Milnayan, and Star Cineplex.
Top honors include the Zaheer Raihan Award for best film and Tarek Masud Award for best Bangladeshi entry.
To expand film appreciation, DUFS runs reading circles, film orientation and appreciation courses, seminars, and ‘Film for Freshers’ for first-year students selected via interviews. It also organizes open-air screenings at TSC grounds on national occasions.
