DU Correspondent :
After a long period of operating in secrecy, the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit has finally come to light.
The Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, had been conducting its activities covertly on the university campus, with its members even residing in dormitories controlled by the Bangladesh Chhatra League for years.
According to reliable sources, Md. Abu Shadik is the current president of the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir Dhaka University unit, while S.M. Farhad serves as the general secretary. Abu Shadik, a student in the Department of Political Science (2016–2017 session), has an impressive academic background. Farhad, meanwhile, is enrolled at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (2017–2018 session).
Hailing from Khagrachhari, Abu Shadik completed his secondary education (Dakhil) at Khagrachhari Baitush Sharaf Madrasha and his higher secondary education (Alim) from Chittagong Baitush Sharaf Jabbarja Adarsha Kamil Madrasha.
Upon joining Dhaka University, he became a residential student at Master Da Surja Sen Hall.
Shadik’s involvement in student activism became particularly prominent during the quota reform movement and the anti-discrimination protests. Notably, he played a significant role in the formation and circulation of the nine-point demands during the internet blackout, a pivotal moment in student mobilisation.
Similarly, SM Farhad, who comes from Rangamati, also completed his Dakhil certification at Maini Baitush Sharaf Madrasha and his Alim at the Chittagong Baitush Sharaf Jabbarja Adarsha Kamil Madrasha before joining Dhaka University. He became a well-known figure during the student movements, with Abdul Kader, the coordinator and spokesman of the nine-point demands, acknowledging on Facebook that Farhad risked his life while playing a key role in the protests.
Farhad is also recognised as an accomplished debater. He was the president of the Kabi Jashimuddin Hall Debating Club and an active member of the Dhaka University Debating Society. For his debating skills, he received an award from then-Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen, further highlighting his talents outside of student politics.
