Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Sammo, police announced on Wednesday.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the arrests but did not disclose the identities of the detainees or details about where they were apprehended.
Shahriar, a student at the Institute of Education and Research, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday night while riding a motorbike through Suhrawardy Udyan near the university campus. He was a resident of Sir AF Rahman Hall from the 2018-19 academic session.
According to his peers, the 25-year-old held the position of literary and publications secretary in the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP.
Friends found Shahriar severely injured and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight. Despite their efforts, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Md Faruk, chief of the DMCH police camp, stated that Shahriar had a sharp weapon injury to his right leg. His body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Following the incident, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
