The Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA) has set up an Art Gallery at the alumni floor of the university’s Senate Bhaban reflecting the reputed history of hundred years of the university.
A total of 113 artworks have been housed in the Art Gallery. Of them, 106 printings and the remaining seven sculptures have been drawn by hundreds of artists reflecting the university’s glorious hundred years.
DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) ASM Maksud Kamal inaugurated the gallery on Friday, while Molla Mohammad Abu Kawser, Secretary General of DUAA, thanked all.
The artworks also reflected the renowned history, tradition, architecture, historical sculptures, movement-struggle and the teachers and students’ achievement.
The art gallery represented the university’s hundred years from the oldest to present view.
“This permanent art gallery is considered as a new milestone in the centenary of the university which is a reflection of education, infrastructure, tradition and freedom movement by the university,” State Minister of Cultural Affairs KM Khalid said.
The Dhaka University started its journey on July 1, 1921. Within a few years of its establishment, the university became the intellectual centre of Bengal and acted as a catalyst for social and political change.
The pioneer of establishing Dhaka University is Nawab Sir Salimullah.
The progressive movement, nationalist movement and movement against the British rule were started from this university.
The university played a pioneering role in many other movements including language movement in 1948, the six-point movement, ’69 mass upsurge, non-cooperation movement in 1971, and the liberation war of Bangladesh.
