The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has issued a fresh directive instructing all public and private secondary and higher secondary educational institutions across the country to officially observe two newly declared national days July Uprising Day and July Martyrs’ Day in recognition of the 2024 student-led mass movement.
The directive, signed by Md Khalid Hossain, Assistant Director (General Administration) of DSHE, was circulated on Thursday (3 July), following the government’s formal declaration of the two commemorative days.
Letters have already been dispatched to heads of institutions and relevant educational authorities to ensure implementation in line with national policy.
According to the notification, 5 August has been officially designated as July Uprising Day, which will be observed as a public holiday from this year.
The day has been categorised under Class ‘Ka’ (A) in the Cabinet Division’s list of national and international observances, signifying its high priority and national importance.
In addition, 16 July has been declared as July Martyrs’ Day, commemorating those who lost their lives during the movement.
This day has been listed under Class ‘Kha’ (B), a category that includes other nationally significant days observed without public holiday status.
Educational institutions have been instructed to organise befitting programs, commemorative discussions, and awareness initiatives to honor the sacrifices and uphold the democratic and anti-fascist spirit of the July movement.
The DSHE emphasised that the observances are intended to instill in students a deep respect for democratic values, civic responsibility, and the memory of the martyrs.
These measures mark the government’s formal recognition of the historic events of July 2024, where mass student protests triggered significant national changes.
The inclusion of these dates in the official calendar institutionalises the contributions and sacrifices made during the movement and ensures their legacy is preserved through the education system.
